Orthobiologics are an exciting, innovative, and minimally invasive treatment option for orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries. These cell-based treatments utilize the body’s own naturally occurring healing mechanisms to help treat injuries and relieve pain. The two treatment options we offer for musculoskeletal and sports injuries are Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) injections (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate or BMAC) and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. Collectively, these treatments are referred to as “Orthobiologics”, an expanding field of regenerative medicine.
The specialists at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates strive to provide patients with the best treatment options based on their individual conditions and lifestyles. Patients who are interested in discussing if they are candidates for these treatments should schedule an appointment with our Orthobiologic Specialists.
Adult stem cells of the mesenchymal lineage have been identified in bone marrow aspirate and contain properties that may control inflammation and stimulate tissue repair, thus used to help musculoskeletal injuries heal more quickly. Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) treatment involves harvesting the bone marrow from the back of the pelvis and minimally manipulating/centrifuging the blood to create a more concentrated solution of MSCs and other cells/growth factors used in the role of tissue repair. Once isolated, they are then reinjected into the injured area. When injected into an injured ligament, tendon or joint, these cells potentially have the capability to take the form of the cells around them and harness your body’s natural tendency to heal. This minimally invasive cell-based therapy is a potential alternative solution to surgery.
In the expanding field of cellular injection therapies, PRP is also used to potentially heal and injured ligament, tendon, or joint, much in the same way BMAC injections do. This treatment involves drawing blood from the patient and separating the platelets and growth factors from the rest of the blood cells using a centrifuge. Platelets are the natural component of blood responsible for healing injuries. These platelets contain specialized proteins and growth factors that trigger the body’s natural healing response and speed up the process. This process allows our specialists to extract the isolated platelets and inject a concentrated amount of PRP into an injured area.
BMAC and PRP regenerative cellular therapies are commonly used to treat chronic inflammation, osteoarthritis, ligament and tendon injuries. Common injuries that our Orthobiologic Specialists treat include:
Knee Pain
Hip Pain
Shoulder and Arm Pain
Lower Leg and Foot Pain
Research and clinical data have shown that PRP and BMAC cellular treatments are extremely safe. No serious side effects have been identified when receiving your own blood or bone marrow cellular products.
When utilized in the right patients, Orthobiologic treatments have shown to be highly effective. In one study, published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 78% of those with osteoarthritis of the knee that received PRP injections showed a reduction in pain and increased function in the knee after one year. The key to the effectiveness of these treatments is making sure that this treatment is right for you. Although Orthobiologic treatments have shown great results, there are some injuries that cannot be treated with BMAC or PRP cellular therapies such as complete tears of tendons or ligaments. It is also important to understand that this area of medicine is still undergoing much research as we learn more about these types of treatments.
Our Orthobiologic Specialists are Board Certified and have undergone advanced training in the use of BMAC and PRP cell-based therapies. We pride ourselves on using only the most evidence-based and scientifically proven Orthobiologic treatments to ensure effectiveness and patient safety.
