What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc, which is often referred to as a bulging or slipped disc, is a condition characterized by the protrusion of one or more of the spinal discs into the spinal canal. A herniated disc may occur in the cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back) regions of the spine. When a herniated discs pinches the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots, it can cause any or any combination of the following symptoms:

  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Pain in the arms or legs

How is it treated?

In many cases, nonsurgical treatment options may resolve the symptoms of a herniated disc. The Spine Specialists at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates may prescribe treatment plans that include any or any combination of the following:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy
  • Activity modification
  • Injections

In some cases, a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgical Procedure may be recommended if nonsurgical treatments have not provided relief. Our Spine Specialists perform a variety of Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures to relieve symptoms. Studies have shown that patients who undergo Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery recover much faster than those who undergo traditional spine surgery.

If you are one of the many that suffer from a debilitating spinal condition such as scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, kyphosis, or spondylolisthesis, you may be a candidate for spine surgery with Mazor Robotics Renaissance®.
