Biceps Tendon Tear

What is a Biceps Tendon Tear and how is it treated?

What is Biceps Tendon?

The biceps tendon connects the biceps muscle to the shoulder. A biceps tendon injury generally occurs when a patient falls on an outstretched arm or from the lifting of a heavy object.  Bicep tendon tears are classified as either a partial tear or a complete tear.

The following are the most common symptoms of a torn bicep tendon:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Weakness
  • Biceps muscle deformity
  • Difficulty rotating the arm

In many cases, a pop or snap is heard when the tendon is torn. Patients who sustain a tear are advised to make an appointment with one of the Fellowship Trained and Board Certified Elbow Specialists at Olympia Orthopaedics Associates as soon as possible. Our specialists thoroughly evaluate, accurately diagnosis, and effectively treat biceps tendon tears.

How is it treated?

Patients who are treated by a Shoulder Specialist at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates will receive a customized treatment solution. Nonsurgical treatment options may be used to treat partial bicep tendon tears. A combination of the following may be used to decrease pain and inflammation and increase strength while the tendon heals:

  • Rest and ice
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy

In some cases, injections may be used to decrease inflammation and pain.

Complete bicep tendon tears that cause severe pain, instability and/or severely limit movement may require surgical intervention in the form of a biceps tendon repair. The Elbow Specialists at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates are experts at performing biceps tendon repairs.
